even practices it without any hope of doing it well."

SMH 1/2

headed into town to do the SMH 1/2. Got there around 7 and had nothing
to do so I just wandered around. Some guy wanted to know if I thought I
could do the 1/2 in my Nike Frees. I answered "ask me again at the
finish?". I was surprised at how close I was to the starting line.
Waited for ever listening to the inane prattle of the guy on the mike
and then we were off. I did not have a watch and so simply ran by
feel. I remember seeing the 5km clock and it said 24:26 and I was
already feeling a bit tired. I think it was more in my head so I tried
to relax and just run. Saw Miss Skarmel run by who always looks like
she is running in a beam of sunshine. I started to just zone out until
djl strode by and had a chat. He was running well and a bit fast for
me. On the second lap I noticed I had been running with a woman with a
CR Cap and we had a chat and it turned out to be Flashduck (Carolyne -
who has been a regular commenter on this blog). Would have loved to
chat more but I was doing my best to run and breathe at the same time.
Carolyne started to pull away being quicker on the downhill then me but
I got it in my head that I would stay with her and I did until the last
hill then I pushed myself and passed her. I knew there was about 2km to go so I
stretched out in my stride and was surprised at how good it felt. Kept
this up to the finish in a tad over 100 minutes. I finished feeling
very comfortable. Scored some free stuff and then met up with a mate
(on his first race) and we sat on the hill and chilled out and talked
about running. Eventually Tanya found us. Then Adam, Tanya and I caught
the ferry to Manly for lunch.

ps. the Frees were perfect. They really force you to stay light on your
feet.

Gives me a weeks total of 85km.
